Domain Name Registration
Domain Name Registration
The domain name is an identification string that is used to recognize a particular website on the internet. This name is also subject to rules of autonomy and authority on the web. It is the address given to a particular website and naming is governed by the rules of the Domain Name System (DNS). It may happen that the prior to the domain registration process, it is realized that the name has already been taken. In this case, one of the options is to wait for the domain to expire and then buy it. However, a more viable option is to explore other extensions such as .info, .biz or .net. If the domain owner is willing to sell the name, the same can also be purchased.

The amount of money to be paid in order to buy domain names would depend on the market value of the name. As an example, .com extensions have a higher demand as compared to others such as .net, .biz or country specific extensions (.au, .uk). Before choosing a domain name, it is important to understand the connect it makes with the business products or services. Apart from the above, a domain name is also the equivalent of a set of numbers that are used to identify networked servers, namely an I.P. address. Since it is hard to remember numbers, these have been converted into names.

What does selection of the domain name depend upon

Based on the type of marketing strategy that is deployed to promote the company, the procedure to buy domain names should be examined accordingly. The job of this name is not just to build brand awareness but also to reinforce the strength of the corporate brand. It is also important that the domain name is capable of getting repeat traffic. It should be possible to generate online leads and sales from the same. The name is the one that will attract customers initially and web content will keep viewers interested, converting some of them into customers.

What to keep in mind while choosing a domain name

To drive web traffic towards one's website, it is important to keep the domain name as simple as possible. Unnecessary use of numbers may not be preferred by most users, or give a feeling of ambiguity. For local businesses, it is strongly recommended that .com names are chosen. Similarly, for a non profit organisation, a .org extension is the best bet to generate appropriate hits and funding. Apart from this, if the chosen name is not liked by the owner, it can always be changed at a later date.

A lot of people have registered short domain names just to sell them on a high price to potential buyers.

One should also make sure that the domain name you are registering for your business doesn’t infringe on someone else's business name or trademarks. Domain Name - Online Representative of a Website

Domain Name Registration
Domain Name Registration

The whole concept of making a website is based on the idea of attracting the targeted audience in whichever way possible. A website has many components that come together to form its structure, such as domain name, hosting type, web pages and content among others. It is highly important that all these factors combine together in the best possible way that produces a successful end result.

Need for a domain name

Domain name is one of the significant facets of a website, since it is the aspect by which people or the targeted audience would remember the website. Depending upon the type or the category of the service, owners can choose from a wide range of names for their website. It is among the most important decisions to be made by anyone who wants to build a website, be it for commercial or personal purposes. There are a lot of factors that go into deciding the domain name of a website, starting from type of service provided to the targeted audience. The name should be relevant to the basic concept of the website, should be catchy and easy to memorise. For example, websites selling shoes and bags of a wide range would have a name like ‘allshoes’ or ‘findallbags’, respectively. This would not only make it easier for people to remember but would also help improve the search engine viability of the website.

Things related with domain name availability

The availability of the desired domain name automatically becomes the next step in the process. The easiest and simplest is a single word domain name that is relevant to the website, simple and comprehensible. With the advent of Internet and it playing a role in every sector, service and trade, the chances of getting a single word domain title are becoming less with time. Thus, it becomes imperative for the owner to get a little creative and ensure that there is domain name availability. There are a lot of permutations that can be applied while deciding the domain name. It can be a combination two words (MySpace), misspelled word (Flickr) or a phrase (donebynone).

There are plenty of domain registration services that are present in the market and it is upon the owner to analyse and choose the right one. .COM is the most viable and popular domain extension, therefore it is best for any website. However, the occupancy levels of this domain are quite high, which means that there is a good chance of its unavailability. The type of domain chosen depends on multiple factors, such as scale of the operation and geographical location. Owners should have backup domains in case the desired domain is not available, such as .BIZ, .ORG and .NET.

Why .com domain is best extension for your online business

Domain Names
Domain Names

There are several reasons why entrepreneurs or companies prefer to buy .com domains.  As per reports, apart from French, German or Spanish internet users, most visitors would point their browsers to a .com extension by default. This is an expectation that has been created by virtue of its popularity. So even if a person knows the domain but not extension, he will mostly try with .com first. A common perception is that the .com domain seems more professional and relevant than others. Therefore, no company would like its business to come across as a cheap one. Additionally, using a .com extension generates less spam than others, as observed by experienced professionals.

How it is beneficial to buy .com domains

Interestingly, the world's leading information search engine, Google, gives a high priority to the .com extension in a domain name. According to the company, these are among the most trusted websites on the internet. Individuals or companies who buy domain name with .com extension are likely to get best results through the process of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Individuals can increase rankings of their websites among top search engines, such as Bing, Google and Yelp, amid others, which will probably facilitate them to make their portals sounder on internet. SEO professionals are aware of the fact that .com domain name extension is most commonly searched by the internet users. In simpler words, using .com makes a website friendly from SEO perspective.

Blogging sites tend to use country specific extensions, or else .me is also used. These are not websites, which are meant to generate business. Similarly, .edu for educational institutions also serves the same purpose. For most media and entertainment purposes, even though it is commercial, .tv is used.

Strategies used by the companies willing to buy domain name

While looking to buy domain name, companies can also consider buying multiple addresses at the same time. However, this is not always a necessary course of action. If the name and ownership of several domain names is common, then this is not important, but the reverse is also true. For example, if .com and .co.uk for a name are both available, it is advisable to purchase both, which would prevent a strong competitor from entering this space. If both the names have been taken, one should not buy .org, unless it is the start of a charitable organisation. Though .net can also be used for businesses, it is generally associated with computer or internet networks. Therefore, the .net extension could convey a wrong meaning for a particular business website.

How to choose a domain name that perfectly syncs with your online business?

Domain Availability
Domain Availability
The selection of a particular domain name for the business is based on several factors, like the type of business, services offered and target audience. Industry experts believe that domain names must not be too long or complicated, but short and easy-to-remember. Purchase of a domain name is based on domain availability. As soon as an individual contacts the server company, his/her desired domain name is blocked by the company after completing the purchase process.

Attracting online visitors through a catchy domain name
Industry experts are of a view that it is extremely important to have a website name, which is able to entice and drive the traffic. Interest of the customer, coupled with high quality of services and products on the website would convert these visitors into customers. In case a domain name that makes complete sense or not, as long as it is catchy and draws the attention of viewers, it will remain in the top results. If websites have to be always spelled in order to avoid confusion, it may act as a deterrent to web traffic.

Prior to the process of domain registration, it would be helpful to do a search on Google keywords in order to look for keywords that are commonly being used to search for related products and services. If an exact match name is chosen, it is important that content on the website is of utmost quality. Only then it will be acknowledged by the top search engine such as Google and Bing. In addition, domain registration campaigns can be organised on the internet, wherein forum or discussion board members can be invited to suggest domain names.

Parameters to be avoided while choosing domain name
Experts believe that website names with hyphens should be avoided. Names with a hyphen have a high tendency of being recognized as a spam. Possibly, it can also create a spelling problem and thus, visitors will be redirected to another links. It is also said that the names that have an attached trademark should not be selected as far as possible. For example, if there is a company called Amazon Gardening, one might want to keep the name as AmazonGardening.com, which could possibly be a legal violation. Similarly, domain registration for words with secondary meanings must also be avoided. Brands that are already established, such as McDonalds, do not need to have a website named in respect to their business. In order to check domain availability, individuals are advised to avail the solutions of such service providers.

What is the difference between reseller hosting and shared hosting

Reseller Business
Reseller Business
There are various companies across the world, which provide web hosting services at reasonable rates. Renting space and bandwidth to publish an online website is known as web hosting. One has to register a domain name (name of the company- example: 123company.com) and then apply for hosting. As long as the domain name has not been taken by someone else, it can be purchased.

A single control panel is provided for the purpose of shared hosting and it is exclusively created for a single user. Additional parked domains can be included as add-ons. On the other hand, reseller hosting is for those people who want to share hosting space and demands several control panels. Each control panel can be sold with an unlimited number of domains. Space available in the shared hosting is more than reseller hosting, since there is only a single user who adds content, unlike multiple users in the other.

Through reseller hosting, multiple shared accounts can be created and each one of these can be sold individually. Every account comes with an individual login, whereas the shared hosting accounts only have a single login. Generally, individuals purchase bulk space to resell it in future, which in turn attract profits, whereas simple space is purchased for creating singular websites through shared hosting. But since both are sharing resources from a server, technically both operate on a shared basis.

Unlimited reseller hosting is a farce

On websites of companies selling hosting space, one may encounter companies which provide unlimited reseller hosting. This is actually a myth, since space is also dependent on bandwidth settings. A realistic number has to be always assigned, which can be increased to include more and more users in the future. It is not possible to set disk and bandwidth to unlimited on reseller, but this setting is sometimes observed on shared web hosting.

There is another type of hosting referred to as dedicated. This means that the server is only for oneself, which could be either through a standalone or a reseller account. On the other hand, different users share the same server for data storage under shared hosting. Each site rests on its own partition to differentiate it from the other ones.

Web hosting does not require much technical training

One does not need to have detailed knowledge about reseller to become an entrepreneur in web hosting. It is only the data centre operator who looks after maintenance of network space and hardware. The regular owner of this service is the one who configures and secures the server to make sure it operates in a trouble-free manner. Though the customer base is formed by the reseller, hardware and connectivity problems are handled typically by the service provider.

Domain Name Registration
When a domain name is registered, legally we have to provide the Registrant details such as name, address, phone number and email. As soon as the registration is completed, all our details are available public in the WHOIS database. Any person who is searching for a domain name can trace out the domain owner with the support of WHOIS database. Therefore, any data mining people or website marketers can obtain the detailed information of the domain owner.

According to the International governing body for domain names (ICANN), every domain registrar should maintain a "WHOIS" database which is publicly viewable with the personal information of the domain registrant such as address, phone number email etc. This implies that whenever you register a domain, your personal information with contact details is readily available on the web for anyone to see publicly.

Registering the domain privately is very much beneficial for the domain owner. It protects the domain owner's privacy, prevents data mining, controls email spam and prevents identity theft. It safe guards the domain from frauds and helps to remain anonymous. It also avoids telesales calls and reduces junk mail.

Domain Privacy
The Provision of Domain Privacy supports in protecting your personal information and hide it from scammers, spammers. This is done by replacing all the domain owner‘s personal information with the registrar's details. There will be default address, phone number and email address in the public WHOIS data base. The Domain owner will have full control over the domain through Online Control Panel. You can work with peace of mind as all the personal information is made private. The domain Privacy is available for all domain extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz at minimum charges. This facility of privacy can be enabled or disabled free of cost, whenever needed from your Online Control panel.

Private Domain Name registration
This can be done for the new domain registration as well as for the existing domains.
To make the new domain registration as Private, you have to just select the check box under Domain Privacy. You can simply check and add the option of Domain Privacy to your new domain while doing the domain registration process. For the existing domain names also you can introduce domain privacy by following simple steps. Login your Control Panel and click Domain Names. Select the domain name for which you would like to have Domain Privacy and then click the Upgrade options. This domain Privacy will be active until the domain expires.

Private domain registration should be seriously considered if you own a website for your work or play. Even though internet is a wonderful marketing tool for the individuals and businesses, it has widely opened the door for immoral practicing greedy people. Why is domain transfer process considered a taboo?

Domain Name Transfer
Domain Name Transfer

The domain transfer process involves transferring a domain name from one registrar (Losing registrar to another registrar (Gaining registrar). This simple process involves various checking steps to ensure the transfer is carried out by the authorized person. This domain transfer process sometimes involves change of domain ownership also, but it does not happen all the time.

All the registrars follow the policies, rules and regulations set by ICANN which is called the Inter-registrar Transfer Policy. Transferring a domain name to another registrar may require a few days and involves a number of cumbersome processes. Even though all registrars follow the same policy and rules of ICANN, the procedure followed by each registrar vary. If the steps are not carried out correctly and promptly then the domain name transfer process may result in failure. If the registrars procedures (both the gaining registrar and the losing registrar) are not followed by the end user in each and every stage,   the domain transfer process results in complication, which cannot be handled.

Requirements for Domain Transfer Process:
Before starting the transfer process, check the following for successful accomplishment of transfer.
  • Check whether the Domain name is expired or nearing the expiration date (minimum one month)
  • Check whether the Domain was created before 60 days or renewed before 45 days.
  • Check for the updated information of the current registrar such as Whois, email addresses
  • Verify whether the administrative contacts as well as the owner of the domain are aware of this transfer.
  • Check whether the domain is not locked for particular reason such as security, pending dispute, domain expiry etc.
  • Do the payment for the domain name transfer to the new registrar.
  • Provide the authorization key to the new registrar for .com .net, .info, .name, .org domains and provide the documentation to the registry for .BE domain. The new registrar will send the Form of Authorization by email with the authorization key to the owner as well as to the current administrative contact of the domain.  If both the persons return the authorization key, then the registrar authorization takes place. The possible state in this Form of Authorization stage are (1)wait contact with 5 days delay or (2) failed contact due to refusal of the transfer.
As soon as the new registrar transfers the request to the registry, it forwards the request to the losing registrar. Within 5 days the losing registrar has to reply having the provision to stop or speed the process. If the losing registrar does not reply, it is considered as the transfer is accepted.

Here the possible states are (1) the wait registry as the registrar has not replied within the 5 days delay. (2) The failed registry as the losing registrar refused the transfer due to various reasons such as expired domain, domain locked by default etc. If the losing registrar refused the transfer, the end user has to contact for more information.

Once the transfer is accepted, it takes about 24 to 48 hours for registry update for .com and .net domains. As soon as the domain end user receives the transfer confirmation, the domain transfer is succeeded.

Failures of domain transfer
If your domain name transfer is not successful, there may be a lot of reasons. For these various reasons, it is better to contact the current registrar.
  • Domain contact did not respond to verification email.
  • Invalid Authorization key
  • Domain is locked by current registrar
  • Domain registration is not yet 60 days old
  • Domain was not re-tagged in time by the losing registrar
  • The domain transfer rejected by the Current registrar
To get rid of these failures, the domain owner or the end user has to follow the registrar’s procedure and respond to administrative contact promptly and correctly otherwise the transfer is really a taboo for the domain owners.

Business owners need to base their domain search on the marketing strategy being adopted. If the business is well-known, then the name of the domain could be same as the brand. However, if the business is not that popular and its viability depends on the ranking in search engine results, then it is imperative that the domain name has appropriate keyword. It should describe the products that the company specializes in manufacturing or selling, such as beautifuloranments.com or sportywatches.com.

The name of the website should be short, simple and catchy, which allows potential customers to easily remember it. Combining two words, shortening a word by removing vowels or using a phrase are some of the options that companies can choose for creating a name for the website. Some of the popular examples are Microsoft, Flickr, Facebook, MySpace, Rechargeitnow.com and eBay. Domain availability is another factor that needs to be considered before finalizing the name. .COM is the most viable domain but its availability is quite dubious, which makes it absolutely essential to have a backup. If the target audience is limited to a geographic location, then it is preferred that the domain name is country specific, for example .CO.IN for India. Other alternative domains like .BIZ, .ORG and .NET can also be chosen, depending upon the type of the company.

The importance of having keywords in the name of the website can never be overstated as it improves the SEO viability along with creating an online image of the business. The domain name should also be protected against any illegal practice that could harm the business.
